The drug regulatory departments in the north eastern states in India have welcomed the Drug Control Officers India Welfare Association (DCO India) to Agarthala in Tripura to conduct training programs for the regulatory officers on the frequent changes and amendments in the rules and regulations of drug laws, changing industry standards and on legal documentations.
As a result, it has been decided to conduct a one-day inter-state workshop-cum-seminar on December 18 at Prajna Bhavan in Agartala, to which drug control officers from all the north eastern states are invited to participate. The workshop is organized by the drug control department in Tripura in association with DCO India, sources from the Tripura DCA informed Pharmabiz.
The workshop will focus attention on regulations of drugs and medical devices, and on legal documentations.
Dr. Kanchan Sinha, drug controller and licensing authority of the Government of Tripura has said that the initiative by the association will strengthen the efficiency of the enforcement officials and the effectiveness of the regulatory mechanism. Since sky is the limit for knowledge and competency is essential for regulators with regard to changing rules and regulations, this on-the-job-training program will help them update fresh information about regulations and documenting procedures. She said two officers from all other states in the north east will attend the program in addition to the 20 drug inspectors, seven ADCs and four Dy DCs from Tripura.
Pointing to the benefits of the workshop, the DC said by conducting the program the department hopes to formulate and implement a flawless system of medicine supply, a foolproof regulatory mechanism and to ensure presence of a medicine market free from any kind of falsified medicinal products anywhere in Tripura.
“The workshop will be attended by regulatory officers from all the north-eastern states as the program is organized in the form of an inter-state training programme. Department of drugs control in Tripura has invited drug regulators from all the north-eastern states including Assam to make it as a north-east level workshop. Apart from drug inspectors, all the high-ranking officials from the state and central drug control departments are expected to attend the programme,” said Kanchan Sinha.
But, the drug controller has not avoided a point of concern in the ongoing enforcement activities which always puts the department into severe difficulties. She said the major concern of the drug control officers in the state is the influx of drugs, mainly codeine based cough syrups from other north-eastern states to Tripura to move to Bangladesh through the state borders. The DCA officials, joining with the police, are trying to track down those people who are facilitating the infiltration of drugs from nearby states and neighboring countries, but the inflow is continuing. According to her, this issue will become a subject of discussion in the inter-state seminar-cum-workshop.
The programme will be inaugurated at 9 AM by the Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha who also handles the ministry of health and family welfare in Tripura. Dr. Debashis Basu, state health secretary will be present in the ceremony as the chief guest and the director of health services, Dr. Subhasis Debbarma, will be the guest of honour. Drug controller Dr.Kanchan Sinha, DCO India national president G. Koteeswara Rao, Hariyana ADC Lalit Goel, DCO India vice-president Rajendar Harna and Treasurer Paramanand Varma will speak on the occasion.
